George Town Revitalisation Phase II

Robson Construction continued its work on the Cayman Islands Government Central Business District Enhancement Project with Phase II, delivering the next stage of George Town’s urban revitalisation across Main Street, Edward Street, Cardinal Avenue and the Post Office intersection.

The project focused on improving pedestrian safety, traffic flow, parking, utility resiliency and the overall public streetscape within one of George Town’s busiest commercial areas. The works included removal of existing asphalt surfaces and replacement with concrete pavers and decorative roadway finishes, together with new drainage, street lighting, landscaping, hardscape features and upgraded public-space infrastructure.

Robson Construction’s scope included demolition and excavation, roadway and sub-base preparation, concrete and paving works, underground utility chases and manholes, drainage infrastructure, street-light foundations, hardscape construction, landscaping preparation, seating areas and associated civil works. The redevelopment also incorporated infrastructure for a new circular monument garden and surrounding public seating.

A major challenge was carrying out the project while maintaining access to businesses, government offices, pedestrians and vehicle traffic in central George Town. At the client’s request, the works were divided into four separate construction phases, allowing sections of the project to be isolated, completed and reopened progressively rather than closing the entire area at once.

The project also required careful coordination around existing underground utilities and third-party utility works. Certain utility relocations and infrastructure activities were carried out by outside service providers under the coordination of the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing & Infrastructure (PAHI), requiring Robson Construction to carefully sequence excavation, backfilling, concrete, paving and follow-on works around those dependencies.

This required ongoing coordination between Robson Construction, PAHI, Public Works Department, the National Roads Authority and utility providers, while maintaining the construction programme, traffic management and safe public access throughout the works.

The completed redevelopment introduced new concrete-paved streetscape areas, improved drainage, upgraded underground infrastructure, urban lighting, landscaping, seating and pedestrian-focused public spaces, building on the improvements delivered during Phase I and further enhancing the centre of George Town.

Phase II demonstrates Robson Construction’s capability to deliver complex public-sector civil and infrastructure projects, where construction sequencing, stakeholder coordination, traffic management and third-party utility dependencies are as important as the physical construction itself.
