Robson Construction delivered major marine, civil and site-development works for the RCIPS Marine & Drug Task Force facility in Newlands, Grand Cayman, creating the protected waterfront infrastructure required to support a secure operational marina with direct access to the North Sound.

The development included the creation of an inland harbour and private marine access, together with extensive shoreline protection and reclamation works. Robson’s scope involved excavation and preparation of the seabed, installation of a rock foundation, construction of a substantial gabion seawall system, placement and compaction of imported fill, geotextile erosion-control systems and formation of the surrounding marina land area. Project documentation records approximately 395 feet of seawall and a significant area of coastal reclamation associated with the facility.

The seawall was constructed using stepped Maccaferri gabion baskets filled with selected rock, supported on prepared shot-rock and Cayman-rock foundations. Behind the seawall, compacted fill, geotextile and crushed stone were installed to create a stable reclaimed platform around the new harbour. The wider project records also include sheet piling, roadway and aggregate works, drainage catch basins and marina wall remedial works, demonstrating the breadth of the civil and marine construction package.

Environmental protection was a major consideration because the works were undertaken directly along the North Sound within a marine Replenishment Zone. Construction therefore required careful control of turbidity and sediment through silt-screen systems, strict management of excavation and fill placement, and ongoing coordination with the Department of Environment and Public Works Department. 

The project also required the removal and reconstruction of existing waterfront infrastructure and included separate work packages for dock reconstruction, marina development and boathouse-related works. The marina was developed specifically to support the operational requirements of the RCIPS Marine & Drug Task Force, requiring a secure, functional and durable facility suited to government marine operations.
